For community banks

Answer engine optimization for community banks

Answer engine optimization (AEO, also called generative engine optimization or GEO) for community banks is the work of making your bank the institution AI assistants name when people in your metro ask where to bank, borrow, or open a business account. It means measuring the answers customers actually get on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI, then fixing the entity records, rate pages, and source coverage that decide who gets named.

Zero banks

named on “best auto loan rates in Tulsa.” Five lenders were quoted by name, with rates, and all five were credit unions. The consumer lending answers are being taken.

One of six

institutions named most often across all 21 Tulsa questions was a bank, and it was one of the largest in the state. Five were credit unions. No community bank made the list.

Payday lenders

are what “best place to get a personal loan in Tulsa” returns. Relationship lenders are losing that answer to storefronts.

What is different for a community bank

The playbook is charter-aware, not generic.

  • Customer questions, both sides of the bank. The 21-question set covers retail and the small-business relationships community banks are built on: business checking, commercial lending, and the local-decision story that should be your edge in a generated answer.
  • Deposit defense where shopping starts. Rate-shopping questions, where do I get a better yield, where should I open an account, are measured explicitly, because those answers are where money in motion now begins.
  • Your peer set is local and honest. The scan measures the banks and credit unions actually competing for your metro’s answers, including the credit unions currently taking consumer lending questions, so you see the real contest, not a national abstraction.
  • Examiner-friendly by architecture. Public web only, no customer PII, drafts with marketing and compliance sign-off, and vendor due-diligence materials prepared in line with interagency third-party risk expectations.

Questions community banks ask us.

Do AI assistants recommend community banks, or just the big ones?

They name whoever made their facts quotable, and right now that is rarely a community bank. In our Tulsa measurement, five of the six institutions named most often across 21 real banking questions were credit unions, and the sixth was one of the largest banks in the state; no community bank made the list (Perplexity, logged out, August 2026, method published with every scan). The engines have no bias about charter or size. The gap is fixable, which is the point.

We are watching deposits leave for fintechs. How does this connect?

The same customers moving money to app-based competitors are the ones asking AI where to get a better rate or open an account, and the generated answer is where that decision now starts. Being named in your metro's answers is deposit defense at the moment of shopping: if the answer only names national apps and megabanks, the money follows it.

Does the scan cover business and commercial questions?

Yes. For banks, the question set includes the small-business side where community banks live: business checking, commercial lending, treasury basics. A bank that makes its commercial offering quotable is competing for answers most institutions have not noticed exist yet.

Our examiners are FDIC and OCC, not NCUA. Does the process fit?

Yes. The architecture was built for regulated institutions: we read only the public web, hold no customer PII and no credentials to your systems, and every fix ships as a draft your marketing and compliance teams approve before it goes live. We prepare vendor due-diligence materials in advance, in line with interagency third-party risk expectations, so your review starts answered.
