Answer Engine Optimization Services: What a Credit Union Should Expect

Answer engine optimization services should do four things for a credit union: document a baseline of what AI assistants say about you, confirm the engines can crawl your site, fix the eligibility, product, and branch content answers are built from, and report evidence you can verify yourself. Much of this is within reach of an in-house team before any provider is hired.

The short version

Answer engine optimization, often shortened to AEO, is the work of making sure AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews can find, read, and correctly repeat the facts about your credit union when a member asks a question. A good service in this space should include four things: a documented baseline of what the engines say about you now, a crawl access check, a cleanup of the eligibility, product, and branch content answers are built from, and clear deliverables with evidence-led follow-up. None of these requires a vendor to start. Your own team can run most of the first pass.

What the engines actually read

An answer engine does not hand back a list to browse. It builds a short answer from pages it can crawl and understand, then names the institutions whose content supports the claim. For a credit union, the pages that matter most are the ones that state membership eligibility, product terms, branch locations and hours, and fee and rate disclosures.

Google is explicit that its AI features, meaning AI Overviews and AI Mode, run on the same foundation as regular Search. According to Google's guide to AI features, foundational SEO best practices apply, with no additional technical requirements or special optimization necessary. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and meeting the requirements still does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. Google also says no new AI text files, special machine-readable files, or special schema.org structured data are required.

That matters when you evaluate any provider. A service that sells you a proprietary AI file or a special schema as a requirement is selling something Google says it does not ask for.

Search access is separate from training

One distinction any service should get right, and explain to you plainly, is the difference between being crawled for search answers and being crawled for model training. OpenAI documents separate controls. Per OpenAI's crawler documentation, OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT search results, and OpenAI recommends allowing it in robots.txt along with requests from its published IP ranges. GPTBot, the training crawler, is controlled independently: you can permit search crawling while disallowing training crawling. Sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though navigational links can still appear. A third agent, ChatGPT-User, handles certain user-triggered visits and is not the control for search inclusion.

If a provider tells you that allowing GPTBot is required to appear in ChatGPT search, that contradicts OpenAI's own documentation. Ask them to show you the source.

What to expect from any provider

Treat these as sensible expectations, not mandates.

A documented baseline. Before changing anything, the provider should record what the major assistants currently say when asked the questions your members ask: who can join, what your checking account costs, whether you serve a specific employer group or county. The baseline should be saved with dates and exact question wording, so later change is measurable rather than vibes.

A crawl access review. This means checking robots.txt and hosting rules for the relevant crawlers, confirming key pages return real text rather than content trapped in images or scripts, and checking that internal links let a crawler reach product and branch pages. Google's guidance points the same direction: allow crawling, use internal links, keep important content in textual form, and keep structured data consistent with visible text.

Content accuracy work. The substance of AEO for a credit union is unglamorous. Eligibility criteria stated in plain text. Product pages that name the product, its terms, and its effective dates. Branch pages with current addresses and hours, matching what your Google Business Profile says, since Google recommends keeping Business Profile information current. Rates and fees deserve a careful eye because they are regulated content, and because an assistant quoting a stale rate is a real member-facing problem.

Clear deliverables and evidence-led follow-up. You should receive a list of what changed, where, and why, plus a re-run of the baseline questions on an agreed schedule so you can see whether the answers moved. Be cautious with any provider that guarantees placement. Google itself says meeting requirements does not guarantee serving, and AI Overviews do not appear for every search. A guarantee of naming is a promise no one controls.

What your team can do in-house first

Before signing anything, a team of one can run a useful first pass in an afternoon.

Ask three or four AI assistants the questions a prospective member would ask: eligibility, checking fees, auto loan rates, branch access. Save the answers with dates.

Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot and confirm your host or content delivery network is not blocking it.

Open your eligibility, product, and branch pages and confirm the key facts are visible as text, not baked into images or PDFs alone.

Compare your site against your Business Profile for hours, addresses, and phone numbers.

Use Search Console to confirm important pages are indexed. Google recommends Search Console for diagnosing technical issues. Note that AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is folded into the Web search type in Performance reporting, so that aggregate is not a standalone count of AI recommendations.

Whatever that pass reveals is the brief you hand a provider, or the list you fix yourself. The credit union page walks through how these checks apply to member eligibility and field-of-membership content specifically.

How to tell whether it worked

Re-run the baseline questions after changes have had time to be crawled. Look for three shifts: your credit union named where it was absent, facts quoted correctly where they were wrong, and stale rates or eligibility rules replaced by current ones. Keep the dated snapshots. They are the only honest before-and-after you have, because the engines do not send you a report when an answer changes.

When checking by hand runs out, meaning too many questions, engines, and branches to re-test manually, Scanley measures this across the AI engines on a recurring basis. That is a convenience, not a requirement. The standard above applies to any tool or service: documented baseline, verifiable changes, evidence you can check yourself.

Questions people ask

Is answer engine optimization different from SEO?

Partly. Google says its AI features run on foundational SEO best practices with no additional technical requirements, so crawl access, indexation, and clear text content carry over. The new part is measuring what assistants actually say about you and fixing the specific facts those answers repeat, which classic ranking reports do not show.

Do we need a special AI schema or AI text file to appear in AI answers?

No. Google states that no new AI text files, special machine-readable files, or special schema.org structured data are required for its AI search features. Keep any structured data you do use consistent with the visible text on the page.

Do we have to allow GPTBot for ChatGPT to show our credit union in search?

No. OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot controls inclusion in ChatGPT search results and that it is controlled independently from GPTBot, the training crawler. You can allow search crawling while disallowing training crawling.

Can we do this without hiring a service?

Much of it, yes. Running baseline questions, checking robots.txt, moving key facts into plain text, and aligning your site with your Business Profile are all in-house tasks. A service becomes useful when the volume of questions, engines, and locations makes manual rechecking impractical.

How do we measure results?

Save dated snapshots of assistant answers to a fixed set of member questions, then re-run them after changes. Google notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in overall Search Console Web search reporting, so Search Console alone cannot isolate AI-driven visits.
